There is a clear reason why we call it the art of driving – like numerous other skills, it is carefully honed over time by experts. My driving instructor, Rocky, was evidently a master of his craft and it was through his thoughtful guidance that I was able to successfully pass my class 7 road test. With ICBC’s suspension of road testing due to COVID, I only decided to seriously practice 2 months before my test this year. I initially began as a fledgling driver under the instruction of my parents for the first month, and although I am deeply grateful for their support, I am concurrently aware of the limitations of parent-teaching. In the next month, I reached out to Rocky for help. The difference was that he provided an extremely structured approach to driving, going through each of the exam skills that I needed and all the detailed road rules. As well, he gave me important insight that could only have come about years of teaching experience. I remember the first class I had where Rocky clearly communicated to me how to do shoulder checks at intersections and stop signs (left-right-shoulder check – left). As well, he helped me easily learn how to do all the difficult skills such as parallel parking (lining up and finding 45 degrees) and anticipating yellow-lights (off the accelerator 100m away). Rocky made me feel much more comfortable behind the wheel - on the days leading up to the exam, I actually stopped practicing with my parents as I realized that it was important to not mess up my mindset and ‘rhythm’ (if there is one takeaway from my time with Rocky, it is his famous phrase: “there is a certain harmony/rhythm to good driving). During my road test, I felt well prepared and was able to effectively complete the necessary maneuvers. The examiner did not find any major faults (or else I would not have passed!) with my driving, and the minor ones he did (namely, more thorough shoulder checks at stop signs and more accurate back-in parking in the lines), I can only attribute to not contacting Rocky earlier. For me, a fair analogy to my driving experiences is cooking – your parents can teach you to be a great cook but only at a culinary school can you qualify to become a chef….

As a newcomer to Canada, I was not familiar with local driving rules. Rocky explained everything in detail, especially the differences between driving here and in my home country.
He made sure I understood stop signs, right-of-way rules, and proper shoulder checks. Thanks to his guidance, I passed my road test smoothly. Very responsible instructor!

Rocky is very professional and honest. He will tell you directly what you need to improve instead of just letting you drive around.
He pays attention to details that examiners care about, such as full stops, lane positioning, and observation. If you are serious about passing your road test, he is the right instructor.

I was very nervous about my road test, but Rocky helped me build confidence. He is calm and never makes you feel stressed. He points out mistakes clearly and teaches you how to correct them immediately. After a few lessons, I felt much more comfortable driving in different traffic conditions. I’m very happy I chose him as my instructor.
